TUC Threatens Protests Over Toll, Electricity, Telecom Tariffs

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has joined the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in opposing proposed government hikes in electricity tariffs, highway tolls, and telecom charges.
TUC President Festus Osifo, speaking after a National Administrative Council meeting in Abuja yesterday, warned that these policies could lead to mass protests if not reconsidered.
He criticized the introduction of tolls on dilapidated roads, calling it “shameless extortion,” and demanded that roads be fixed to international standards before tolling.
Osifo also raised concerns about the proposed telecom tariff increase, which would raise call rates from 12 Naira to 18 Naira per minute, SMS from 4 Nair to 6 Naira, and data from 300 Naira to 400 Naira per gigabyte.
Additionally, he warned against a possible 66% electricity tariff hike, labelling it economic oppression.
